Callanetics is one of the few exercise programs that has managed to withstand the test of time. This exercise program can help you successfully and safely get back in shape, no matter what shape you are in now.

Developed by Callan Pinckney in the 1980s, Callanetics exercises target deep core muscles with gentle short-range movements. These are very effective in reshaping and "shrinking" your body with emphasis on core strengthening. With Callanetics Dvds you will strengthen, tone and reduce your:

What are Callanetics Exercises?

Notice we said that these exercises are gentle. We didn't say that they are easy. Even though you won't be jumping up and down, or sweating with a cardio workout, you will find that these core exercises require a concentrated effort.

One way to describe Callanetics would be a combination of ballet, yoga and pilates with all the core control, alignment, flexibility and strength benefits that these disciplines offer.

Basically, you will find your whole body toning and firming up: abs, hips, buttocks, thighs and arms. And you don't need to wait long to feel and see the results. Aches and pains begin to diminish as you strengthen your core and improve your postural alignments.

What you won't see right away is an immediate weight loss on the scales corresponding to the smaller circumference measurements and better fitting clothes that you see and feel.

Cautions:  Callanetics can be deceptive in their small movements. You can tend to over-do at first. Stop each exercise when you become jerky in your movements and build up your control gradually, especially if you are doing these exercises to improve aches and pains.

Where to Start?

Here are some suggestions as to which to Callanetics dvds to try:

1. Our number one recommendation is 10 Years Younger in 10 Hours. It is the original program with all the basic moves, targeting all the body areas. It is a 60 minute workout.

2. If you are out of shape and think that you had better ease into it, start with the Beginning Callanetics . It is better to focus on your form and be able to do the exercises well, than to try to begin at a higher level and perform the exercises with poor form. You will have more success starting with the beginner level, especially if you are trying to get back in shape with a painful condition.

3. If setting aside 60 minutes at least twice a week seems difficult, or if you prefer to break-up your workouts into shorter sessions, choose the am/pm Callanetics which gives you a 20 minute energizing morning workout and a 20 minute relaxing evening workout.

4.  Super Callanetics   is for those who have mastered the program and want to achieve greater results. It is generally not recommended for someone new to Callanetics, unless perhaps you have a good base in ballet, yoga or Pilates and are pain-free.

5.  The "Quick" Dvds - For someone who is primarily interested in seeing firming in a specific area, or who needs to break up their workouts into shorter routines, try the quick Callanetic dvds.

6.  CardioCallanetics  Callanetics Evolution are two new Callanetics programs. These comments are prefaced by the fact that we haven't actually tried the new versions.

CardioCallanetics - If you already do cardio workouts, this workout may not be challenging enough for you.  However, if you need a cardio program, this one may be ideal as it is supposed to be low impact.  Many reviewers seem to think that there is an initial dislike having been used to the original Callanetics workouts, but then they get to enjoy the new workout with its added cardio benefits.

Callanetics Evolution -  There are positive and negatives to this new program.  Some of the moves from the original are missed by some reviewers and some exercises are too hard or too easy to others.  Without having to compare the older versions of Callanetics to the new versions of Callanetics, what would seem to work best is to get them both.  Keep the old tried and true methods, but add the new Evolution and/or Cardio version as a compliment to your older programs.

 am/pm Callanetics :  If you don't have 60 minutes at a time to do the full program, the am/pm dvd gives you a 20 minute morning "energizing" workout and a 20 minute evening relaxing program.



Quick Callanetics DVDs - 20 minutes:

Quick Callanetics - Stomach: If you just have 20 minutes and want to focus on your abs and having a flat stomach, this dvd will give you the best ab workout and other aspects of your core. 


These are not different exercises from the original 10 years younger dvd, they are just selected as being most beneficial to achieving a flat stomach in a shorter exercise workout.


 Quick Callanetics - Legs -  As with all the "Quick" dvd's, this one is 20 minutes.  It is dedicated to shaping up nice looking legs.  It targets all the leg muscles esp. the difficult inner and outer thighs.



  Quick Callanetics - Hips & Behind - These are the exercises famous for turning a pear shaped behind into a "sweet tight peach".  The old Callanetics website used to have amazing photos of what one would think could never be done with saddlebags (short of liposuction).  If you want to lift and transform your backside - this is it!

Confession:  We actually haven't tried the 2 new Callanetics Dvds - CardioCallanetics and CallaneticsEvolution.  So, we can only give you second hand info based on what we've heard and what we know about Callanetics.

We like the originals and we don't mind the out of fashion videos.  We have the moves fairly well memorized and add them to our TV time. 

We have heard both good and bad.  Some of you don't like the changes in the new dvds, and we have heard from those who do like the new programs, especially with the addition of cardio.  We think that if you are new to Callanetics and like a more modern look to your videos, these two new dvds may be a good place to start.
