How To Get Back In Shape

Find a Yoga Instructor

Do Yoga at Home with DVDs

Yoga - Yoga is more than an exercise program. While its practice is particularly good for your overall health, it targets not only your body, but your mind and spirit also., Inc   Before you begin a yoga exercise program to get back in shape, it is best to get some professional instruction so that you understand the principles and understand the proper feel.

If you have a particular health condition, you may want to try Restorative Yoga so you will want to find a Yoga Instructor with this additional training.

Yoga balances, strengthens, and stretches your body.  It improves your breathing. Its emphasis on postural muscle control, is particularly good for people who have special physical concerns, such as back pain, as they work on getting back in shape.  And it also emphasizes relaxation.

What Type of Yoga Should I Do?

There are many types or styles of Yoga.  If you are choosing yoga to get back in shape, begin with a more therapeutic or gentle type of yoga such as

  •  Iyengar Yoga especially their Restorative Yoga, named for B.K.S. Iyengar.
  •  Viniyoga and
  •  Integral Yoga are also forms of yoga well suited to those trying to get back in shape.

Ashtanga Yoga is a more vigorous style of yoga and more difficult for a beginner or person with an special health or joint concern, but it is good for someone who wants a more difficult conditioning workout.

Find a Yoga Instructor - Ask a potential yoga instructor about their training, experience, Inc   and whether or not the style of Yoga they teach is appropriate for your condition and what you want to achieve as far as getting back in shape.  Do they teach privately or in classes? Or consider expert online instruction in Rodney Yee's, Yoga Club   >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Find a Yoga Studio -  Iyengar

*Our personal bias is that in general, it is better to try to find yoga instruction in a yoga studio rather than at the gym, especially if you are looking for more experienced yoga instructors.

An excellent beginning Yoga DVD with Patricia Walden, a yoga instructor of Iyengar,  is available thru Gaiam.

One of our Back in Shape Buddies is raving about a course they recently attended called, Taoist Longevity Breathing Yoga.  It is a course put on by
